ROB #4

The bong brothers and Iman both represent opposites of the way that people take care of their things. The bus was a complete wreck under the care of the bong brothers but thrived when Iman came. There was overgrown weeds and a reeking smell that overwhelmed Bone when the bong brother, Richard and James were in possession of the bus. Upon his second journey to the bus, the bus was reborn as a sanctuary. Bone had to take care of froggy and this was an additional burden. I got a sense that religion was introduced as soon as Iman enterned the book. IMAN appeared to be this wise man who Bone looked up to. I had a large amount of respect for him. As soon as i was introduced to him, i knew that this character was going to play a huge part in the life of Bone. On Fourth of July, we find out that he is more scared than he lets on to. He has been afraid for much of his life and is not the cool, carefree person that he has made himself up to be.

Jamaica was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1494 and later the Spanish came in 1509. They then executed and or enslaved the Arawaks, the native people of Jamaica. Then in 1655 it was lost to the English and slavery continued to increase. This was because the sugar became a booming industry. In 1678 there is the first of many slave uprisings. However in 1834 the sugar industry continued but slavery was finally abolished. In 1962 Jamaica becomes and independent country.

Haile Selasie - He was known for being the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930-1974. He was an autocratic ruler who modernized Ethiopia and helped resist Italian invasion. In 1941 he restored power after being exiled in 1936. He did this by getting help from the Allies in WW II. However in the seventies he began to loose support when drought's and famines came over the land. He died in 1974 while under arrest. He was also said to be the reincarnated Jesus Christ by Rastas.
Rastafarianism - This is a religion that came from Jamaica. They believed that Africa is the promise land and that someday all true believes will return to. They also believe the Haile Selassie is the messiah.
Bob Marley - Bob Marley's real name is Robert Nesta and was born in 1945 and died in 1981. He was a famous reggae singer, guitarist and songwriter. He sang about peace and popularized the Rastafarianism religion.

As Russ finds me tied up in his room, I begin to explain how I got there and unties me. Just as we do this, the door begins to jiggle and Bruce's deep, intimidating voice can be heard just outside. Growing frustrated from the lock on the door, he starts to knock it down. Me and Russ start to panic and realize that if we dont get out of here right now, were both done for. Knowing there isnt time for us to undo the latch on the window, we throw a nearby trophy and shatter it. Flying through the air we end up in the dumpster followed closely by Joker and the rest of the gang. Russ hands me a colt .45 and tells me to shoot. I tell him i cant and he tells me the shut the fuck up and shoot. I point it at roundhouse and pull the trigger. His beard covered with blood, he falls to the ground and the other bikers freeze in place. "Back the fuck up!" I say and they all slowly creep backwards. As this is happening we hear sirens coming from down the street and realize that the apartment is up in flames. Me and Russ make a run for it and hop on the first two bikes we find in the garage. Once we are free, I cannot believe that i actually killed someone. The line i thought i had drawn about crime is gone. I am now a true criminal.

Banks uses a writing style that is easily relatable to teenage vernacular. I get a sense that the main character is simply thinking his thoughts as i read them. It is very easy to relate to him speaking.
The Canadian and the girl are a strange couple. I think the girl is just following the man who is a huge pervert. Its a good thing that Chappie could see through his attempts use him in a porno. Both the security guard and his stepfather treat him very badly. They want him punished and have no sympathy for him whatsoever. I feel sligtly bad for him because of the lack of people who care about him, but this feeling quickly fades as he shows how he truly feels about his mother.
Teens who begin using drugs at an early age are 10x more likely to have development problems later in life and continue using drugs later in life.
Weed is a gateway drug to "harder" drugs.

Rule of the Bone

In chapters 1 and 2, it is revealed that the main character wants a mother and a father who love him. He has chosen to rebel against his parents and run away from home. I believe that he basically wants to do the right thing but as a result of his poor upbringing, he does not necessarily know right from wrong.
He has run away from home and has no intention of going back to the way things were even though he has the opportunity.
Teens run away because of bad situations at home to escape their problems but it ends up just creating more trouble for them.
Most teens that run away will eventually come back
